My mother was of one of the remnant bands of Shawnee who escape 'relocation' to Indian Territory during the first half of the 19th century. They did this by buying back pieces of their own land back from the white people. Land that the whites saw as undesirable. Not being federally recognized these remnant Shawnee were deem 'colored' and fell under the scrutiny of 'Jim Crow'
My father was descended from the Irish indentured servants who came to Virginia in the early 17th century. Some either served out their indenturement or escaped thus moving into and beyond the Appalachians.
As a small child and into early adulthood my mother and grandmother told me of all the Shawnee traditions , history and culture they could. As a child most of the Anglo children where I grew up in eastern Virginia gave me a hard time so I found what other mixed and pure native people there were to make friends with. I have never been a Christian and for the most part have a general distrust of them as many say I'm going to hell for not believing in Jesus or Jehovah.
