Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat.

The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy is run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations.

Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketeers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system.

The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.

Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

Such an authority would have to be "regulated by law" and "would need to be universally recognized and to be vested with the effective power to ensure security for all, regard for justice, and respect for rights."

"Obviously it would have to have the authority to ensure compliance with its decisions from all parties, and also with the coordinated measures adopted in various international forums," he said.

REFORM NEEDED

The United Nations, economic institutions and international finance all had to be reformed "even in the midst of a global recession," he said in the encyclical, a booklet of 141 pages.

The pope's call for a supranational body to tackle global economic woes disturbed some Catholic capitalists.

"There is a difference between coordination and mandate ... a reckless loan in the United States can and did impoverish people in Latvia. So obviously coordination is important as long as it is not mandates," said Frank Keating, CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers and former Governor of Oklahoma.

An encyclical is the highest form of papal writing and gives the clearest indication to the world's 1.1 billion Catholics -- and to non-Catholics -- of what the pope and the Vatican think about specific social and moral issues.

This one was addressed to all Catholics and "all people of good will" and was released on the eve of the start of the G8 summit in Italy and three days before the pope is due to discuss the global downturn with U.S. President Barack Obama.

In several sections of the encyclical, Benedict made it clear he had great reservations about a totally free market.

"The conviction that the economy must be autonomous, that it must be shielded from 'influences' of a moral character, has led man to abuse the economic process in a thoroughly destructive way," he said. Continued...

church on issues such as aid to the developing world, nuclear
disarmament, and building ties with the Muslim world.

Obama has also sought to calm the disagreement on abortion by
emphasizing adoption, discouraging teen sex, and promising to provide
"robust" protections for doctors, nurses and pharmacists who refuse to
provide abortion-related services.

Was this pope's death prophesized Northern, he is the last or the second last pope, cant remember now. But I would like to go underneath their city, the vatican where all their secrets are with a documentary crew (I wouldn't go alone) unless it was with all you guys, I would be too scared, and show the world exactly what was going on and what they were up to. Now that would be something, a real eye opener to say the least.

Yeah hippie, brought up as an RC myself, went to catholic school, Sisters of St Joseph and they were brutal, nasty, vicious, frustrated women, well most of them were, a couple weren't bad. How many times did I get punched in the back, my hands swollen and raw from the strap, the ruler, just for being scared and doing something wrong in your work, (it was the early 60's here), the most unspiritual, unkind biddies.

and looking back on it i think my father was an early conspiracy theorist..
he would get me in trouble by saying..hey ask the nuns about Pope Gregory and his

WH, that is funny!
I must admit that I did the same thing when I was young, you know the expected ones:
I used a bad word. I didn't go to mass last week. I forgot to say my prayers, etc.

Once I became a teenager, me and my sisters were done. We would only show up to see our friends after the mass, so that we could make fun plans for the day.

My parents were so happy that we quit because they never believed in organized religion and actually despised it.
I asked later why they even bothered to send us if they felt that way.

They said because my aunt who was a religious freak wouldn't stop hounding them but they always knew that we would eventually find out for ourselves that it was nothing but a load of crock to enslave you.
They pointed out how they made people stand up, sit down, knell, say this or that and how it was designed to make you act like a robotic slave and how you actually paid them money for that honor!!!.

That spirituality can only be found from within, not in the group think and that actions will always speak louder than words every single time.
And to never fear the Creator because He loved all of us equally, always forgave us but only if we realized that we made a stupid mistake and then changed our behavior.

My parents thought the only bad things were not being true to yourself, being meek, acting disrespectful to others, trying to deceive or harm the innocent, not lifting a hand to help others, worrying about what others think and especially not laughing and just enjoying ourselves while we are all here!
Because ALL we have is THIS moment.
