Narcolepsy cases rising after swine flu vaccine

Ninety-three people in Sweden, most of them children, have been diagnosed with narcolepsy since taking the swine flu vaccine Pandemrix last winter, according to figures from the Swedish Medical Products Agency (Läkemedelsverket).

In 88 of the 93 cases, the agency has identified a direct correlation between the vaccine and the onset of narcolepsy, a sleep disorder causing extreme drowsiness and daytime sleep attacks.

According to the Swedish Association of Persons with Neurological Disabilities (Neurologiskt handikappades riksförbund - NHR), the agency is examining a further 135 cases involving children and will present its full findings later this summer.

NHR announced on Friday the launch of a 250,000 kronor ($40,000) research grant to facilitate studies of the relationship between Pandemrix, a drug manufactured by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, and narcolepsy.

“We are deeply concerned and have decided that things needs to happen, and quickly,” said NHR chair Kathleen Bengtsson-Hayward in a statement.

A study presented in March by the Medical Products Agency showed that children and adolescents under 20 vaccinated with Pandemrix could be up to four times as likely to develop narcolepsy as those not inoculated.

Since August 2010, at least 12 countries have reported cases of narcolepsy, particularly among children and adolescents, after receiving a swine flu, or H1N1, vaccine.

Figures from Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen), show that 31 million people have been vaccinated with Pandemrix in Europe.

According to the WHO, the rates of narcolepsy reported in Sweden, Finland and Iceland were higher than those in other countries.

LVP said it would review each claim individually to calculate the scope of the payout.

The Finnish government meanwhile agreed to cover any medical costs exceeding the insurance claims.

In Finland, 79 children between the ages of four and 19 developed narcolepsy after receiving the Pandemrix vaccine in 2009 and 2010.

Of these cases, an unusually high number, 76, also suffered from bouts of cataplexy, suffering hallucinations or paralysing physical collapses, according to Finnish research.

No amount of compensation would ever cover this if your child were a victim of vaccine damage. What's worse is that those that administer it, and the pharma that makes it, is excused from paying out or admittance of the damage. Makes my blood boil.

First our Finnish government is paying for the Big Pharma poison, and then signing up to BAIL OUT GLAXO SMITH KLINE.

There's been very little mass-media attention in Finland given to the outrageousness of the whole situation, but it's been well bubbling under the public discussion.
I believe it's definetly been a real eye opener to some people.

Exactly Mr Horse. I have no idea why we're bailing out all the banks with our own money, Iceland had the right idea on that score.

As for the pharma industry, this again is another cop out, whereby they are paying out millions each year to damaged people, only for us to pay ourselves back in compensation with our own money!! Not really a dent in the pharma pocket is it?

But at least the Finnish government are paying out your own money. In the UK and a lot of other countries, they won't even recognise that vaccines cause damage.

DON'T get vaccines in the first place and save yourself a lot of heartache and money.
