Subject: FLA mayor framed for criticizing police? Mon Aug 01, 2011 11:33 am

OAK HILL, Fla. -- The 84-year-old mayor of Oak Hill in Volusia County said the pot plants that narcotics agents said they found in her yard did not belong to her.
Mayor Mary Cook says she was a gardener back in the day, but that she's not up to it anymore. But she says if she had planted marijuana in her back yard the plants would look better than the scraggly ones investigators found.
"If I were going to plant marijuana, I wouldn't plant it right up next to my house and I would certainly have a better-looking crop," Cook said.
Cook was surprised when investigators found 10 tiny pot plants on a table behind her azalea bush. The table had been dragged there because it is typically in another part of the yard, she said.
Cook's son David, 50, who also lives at the residence, said he walked the area of the yard just a few days ago to check a break in the fence on the five-acre property. He didn't find any marijuana then, he said.
Cook thinks she's been set up for her criticism of the police department. "I criticize the police department all the time, " she said.
She said it's no secret she's had brushes with Police Chief Diane Young because she doesn't think she's qualified. Cook isn't accusing Young or her supporters, but the implication is there. Cook insists the plants didn't materialize. She said she isn't worried about any other attacks by potential enemies.
"I just don't know, I'm not going to worry about it, I'm too old to worry about stuff like that," Cook said.
Cook has not been charged with anything yet but she hasn't been cleared either, police said. The investigation is still ongoing.
