Rare 'Midnight' Solar Eclipse Coming Tomorrow

Published May 31, 2011
| Space.com

Starry Night Software

Shortly before midnight on June 1 in Tromso, Norway, the partially eclipsed sun will hang just above the northern horizon.
Over the next month, the world will experience three eclipses: two partial solar eclipses a month apart and one total lunar eclipse exactly in between, and it all starts with a so-called "midnight" eclipse of the sun.

A solar eclipse at midnight? How is such a thing possible?

It can happen near midsummer in the high Arctic, the land of the midnight sun. And it will happen this week on June 1 and 2, visible in the northernmost reaches of North America, Europe, and Asia. [Photos: The First Solar Eclipse of 2011]

These two solar eclipse sky maps available here detail what observers could see during some of the upcoming eclipses of the sun and moon in June.

'Midnight' solar eclipse of June 2

The eclipse begins on Thursday, June 2, at dawn in northern China and Siberia, then moves across the Arctic, crossing the International Date Line and ending in the early evening of Wednesday, June 1, in northeastern Canada. [2011 Solar and Lunar Eclipse Skywatching Guide]

That’s right: The eclipse begins on Thursday and ends on Wednesday because of the International Date Line. Because observers in northern Russia and Scandinavia will be observing it over the North Pole, they will actually see it in what is, for them, the middle of the night of June 1 and 2.

Solar eclipse no one will see on July 1

Exactly a month later, on Friday, July 1, an equally bizarre eclipse will occur in the Antarctic.

Because this is the southern winter, the sun will be below the horizon for almost all of Antarctica, except for a small uninhabited stretch of coast due south of Madagascar. The only place the eclipse will clear the horizon will be in a small area of the Southern Ocean, far to the south of South Africa. [Solar Eclipse Photos: The View From Space]

Chances are that this eclipse will be witnessed only by penguins and sea birds.

Lunar Eclipse of June 15

Exactly halfway in between these two partial solar eclipses, there will be a total eclipse of the moon on Wednesday, June 15. [Blood Red Moon: 2010's Total Lunar Eclipse]

The eclipse will be visible for millions of people in Africa, the Middle East and southwestern Asia. It will be visible as the moon rises in the early evening in South America and Europe, and as the moon sets before dawn in eastern Asia and Australia.

Unfortunately, it will not be visible anywhere at all in North America.

Sun and Moon in Gemini 11º

The cosmos is about to present us with a 'perfect storm' to practice our crisis/opportunity kung fu. Three eclipses in a row create a notable opening for realignment. The slope gets slippery; we shift our weight, we lose our footing, our assets realign, resources appear, we perceive the dance in a new light.

Eclipses are cyclical. Six months and 19 years. We experience two eclipse cycles a year - one winter, one summer with two or three solar/lunar eclipses together. And each eclipse cycle is related to a prior eclipse 19 years previous. So, review what you were doing 19 years ago - that would be about June 1992 when we last saw this eclipse cycle at the same degree. Those same issues and themes frequently come spiraling up for review.

Here's the current line up:

June 1 - New Moon-Partial eclipse of the Sun Gemini 11º visible in eastern Asia, northern Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and the northern tip of Scandinavia.

June 15 - Full Moon-Total eclipse of the Moon Sagittarius 24º visible in Australia, Asia, Japan, India, Africa, Europe, and South America except the northwestern part.

July 1 - New Moon-Partial eclipse of the Sun Cancer 9º visible from the southern tip of South Africa, Antarctica, Tasmania, and New Zealand.

Often the effects are strongest in the path of the eclipse, although they affect the entire planet.
Eclipses are precise alignments of the Sun, Moon and Earth. Electromagnetic energies are briefly interrupted, up graded and reset. Shift can come easily, suddenly, completely. Eclipses are thought of as marking beginnings and endings. As this cycle of three eclipses begins with a New Moon, we have the opportunity to set our intention about what we would like this entire period from June 1 through mid July to bring to us. In fact, it is practically mandatory. You don't want this much energy blasting through your reality without a point of focus - an intention. The times are like the exhilaration you feel when crossing a raging river over a big log. You don't want to look down, only where you want to end up! That raging river holds the chaos of the collective change we're passing through. Don't end up in it; know what you want to create and keep your sights focused and undistracted.

The first eclipse is the initiator and accelerator. There's much support available especially from Saturn, Vesta, and Pallas Athena. Saturn wants us to be disciplined, aware of time, not putting things off, showing up, moving things into balance one step at a time and in Libra relationships, business, social justice and valuing connectedness, aesthetics, art, and beauty are the most likely playing fields.

The second eclipse will hold more emotional impact, bring into play our subconscious lunar natures and stretch us out to a galactic level as it touches near the Galactic Center of our galaxy. Energies that awaken and transform us from deep within the consciousness of our cosmic structure are pulling us out of our hamster-wheel lives and linking us to forces much greater than we have ever experienced. Remember to link your heart to the heart of the Sun on a daily basis to keep energetically current.

The third eclipse is the most powerful and rates a five on a four-star rating scale. Very likely a major turning point of the year. The last time we saw a similar configuration (last summer) we manifested the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. What we have here is a Grand Square/Cardinal Cross made up of Saturn, Uranus, Pluto and the Sun/Moon in the first 10º of the cardinal signs known for their ability to generate crisis/opportunity. Squares generate the kind of energy, pressure and conflict that cause events to manifest for all to experience. Situations come to a head. Pluto, Uranus, Saturn tend to manifest experiences that we as a collective need to experience to learn important lessons for our evolvement. It's a pressure cooker for growth! And we can't discount the increased ramp-up energetically called into play by the Mayan calendar. June straddles Day 3 (sprouting, 5/20-6/24) to Day 4 (leaf formation, 6/25-7/12). It's like my dentist says, "...you are going to feel a little pressure" as he puts a foot long needle into my jaw. We will, no doubt feel pressure from this configuration. We may feel intently the shifting of security out from under us and feel the uncomfortable wave of void that comes from cutting loose our enmeshment with our current constructs that make us feel safe. Moving towards the peak of sun spot cycles as we are now only increases the intensity.

Now, this is no situation to walk into with a loose container, no intentions and dragging a lot of emotional baggage. Take some time at this New Moon and clean out, get very clear about what you want in your life and of what you're letting go. Cement it with some ritual. Write it down. Walk in Nature. Ask for help. With a Gemini archetype active, it's always a good idea to discipline the mind, your thoughts, your communications. Be conscious and deliberate. Thoughts and words matter to the extreme. Perception can shift in an instant. Be as fluid, flexible and adaptable as fleet-footed Mercury, the ruler of a Gemini Moon.

In June, seven out of nine planets plus Chiron are either changing signs or directions (retrograde/direct) not including the Moon. The energies are conspiring to keep the rug pulled out from under us and provide us with practice in finding our center inside. Contact with this void, unknowing state could be almost constant. Out of the cracking open come new ideas, new resolve, quick thinking, cooperation, and wit. Of course we are used to the inner, personal planets, Venus and Mercury changing signs on a 3-4 week basis: Venus moves to Gemini June 10, Mercury moves to Cancer June 17 - no big deal. But with more significance, Neptune, only two months and 0º into Pisces turns and retraces steps on June 3rd retrograding towards Aquarius (August 3rd). Jupiter says bye-bye to Aries and enters earthy Taurus for a year (6/5/11-6/12/12) to expand our sensual relationship to being human, to interest us in expanding our resources, satisfy our appetites and explore where stubbornness gets us. Saturn finally moves direct on June 13 after five months of retrograde introspection and slowed progress and will take until mid-September to pass again the point where it left the road. Our agreements and commitments are up for reconsideration. Old forms of relating and doing business are being called out for their selfishness and greed. Saturn in Libra values fairness, equality, and social balance. The fresh energies are in people mixing it up in whole new ways. Chiron also retrogrades about June 8th until mid-November opening one more portal to release the past and reframe the energy into personal power borne of experience. Not to mention that pesky, Full Moon eclipse June 15th and Summer Solstice coming June 21st. (Picture Munch's painting of "The Scream" here) Well, that's probably more than you wanted to know, but you get the idea - Lots of shift and movement, a lesson unto itself regardless of what's slipping and sliding around.

Expect to notice the field of the eclipses several days before and several days after the exact day of the event. Step over doubt and anxiety and move up to gratitude as often as necessary. And celebrate your willingness to be a part in this shift from a 3rd chakra orientation of will to the creation of the web of the 4th chakra of love and connectedness that is growing from the heart of each one of us.

Rare 'Midnight' Solar Eclipse Empty
PostSubject: Re: Rare 'Midnight' Solar Eclipse   Rare 'Midnight' Solar Eclipse Icon_minitimeFri Jun 10, 2011 2:28 am

here is a little tickler about this coming eclipse

A Global Crash Libretto

http://urbansurvival.com/week.htm

With more than half the country thinking we're heading into a Second Depression (we likely are...) I assume you would like an update to your libretto as to exactly when that might be? Librettos being, of course, the little 'cheat-sheet' handed out at high falutin events like operas and such so you can get a clue as to what's going on.

Since we don't know if Clif's new Shape of Things to Come can be constructed in time for the first/trigger event, though it will have a lot more detail in it when released, the key thing I've been authorized to reveal in advance of the next 'rickety time machine' report [predictive linguistics] is that we will likely see our first round of systemic crashing in a 'time band' between summer solstice and fall equinox. That much you've maybe picked up here previously.

But here's an important refinement: Circle plus or minus a couple of days for Europe or the U.S. to let loose. It's a Tuesday. If you're really savvy on how international markets work, that should immediately send you scurrying to this link where you'll find that June 1st features a partial solar eclipse and June 15th features a total lunar eclipse.

A brilliant fellow named Steve Puetz is credited with observing that crashes seem to occur shortly after the first full moon after a solar eclipse. Six days before to three days after a full moon within six weeks of a solar eclipse.

That makes our next stop the calendar listing of full moon dates in 2011.

The closest full moon is June 15 and three days after that is the 18th - a Saturday, so maybe around Friday June 17th on the early side. But that would be early - at least linguistically.

On the other hand, since language-forward suggests Europe will crash first, the U.S. following a few weeks later, we might see something like the July 15th full moon being the key date, which would put the 'crash window' (for the US) in the July 9 to July 18th range. That would mesh with language-forward.

One more data set to consider and we can write the future....or, at least maybe, kinda, sort of.....

We know, for example, from a study of past markets, that crashes tend to happen in the area from 37-days after a major high to 55/60 days after a major high. September 3, 1929 was a high for the pre-Crash Dow in the lesser Great Depression,

The problem with 1929 is that it could be argued that there were actually two crash dates. A lesser one on October 24, 1929 and a more historic one on October 29, 1929. So in the first instance, we have 51-days from market high and 56-days in the latter.

Black Monday in 1987 fell on October 19th. So again, we refer to Yahoo Finance and their historical data to discover that the intra-day high of the Dow fell on August 25, 1987 and the crash date was smack-dab on 55-days.

Next we can flip back to the recent highs of the Dow, and thanks to the data from Finance.Yahoo.com, we can see here that there was a decent intyra-day high listed as 12,928.45 on May 2, 2011.

Interestingly, Clif's data seems to show that the first wave of the global crash ought to hit June 21st and be Europe-centered. Plugging in 51 days, that May 2 high in the Dow turns into a caution day on June 22, 2011, which is close enough to June 21st for the kind of work we do. So we have an interesting period coming up June 21st, to say the least!

Thus, from a trading standpoint, we might be especially wary of the June -July period anyway this year, but a scenario where Euro crashes, there's a pause, and then the U.S. markets fail, is certainly not out of the question.

Very long total lunar eclipse coming Wednesday
Next time there will be one this exceptional is in seven years

Rare 'Midnight' Solar Eclipse 11061110

By Joe Rao
Space.com
updated 2 hours 52 minutes ago 2011-06-11T18:03:37
This month's full moon will pass almost directly through the center of Earth's shadow on Wednesday in what will be an unusually long total eclipse of the moon.

The lunar eclipse will occur just two weeks after a June 1 partial solar eclipse, when the moon blocked part of the sun as viewed from Arctic regions. The eclipse won't be visible from North America due to its timing, which places the event in the daylight hours when the moon is behind the local horizon.

But the Eastern Hemisphere of Earth will be facing the moon during the eclipse. This hemisphere, centered on a spot in the Indian Ocean to the east of the island nation of Madagascar, will have a ringside seat for this event. [ Video: Inside the June 15 Total Lunar Eclipse ]

Since the Earth rotates during the several hours of the eclipse, more than a hemisphere sees stages of it.

Where the best views may be
For all of the places mentioned below, next week's lunar eclipse will be taking place during the morning early hours of Thursday as they are west of the International Date Line.

For moon-gazers in Russia's Sakhalin Island, moonset virtually coincides with the moon's entry into the umbra (1823 GMT). The beginning of penumbral eclipse starts about an hour earlier, before the moon sets,
but this is only a theoretical matter since the outer part of the penumbra (the Earth's shadow) is imperceptible even high in the sky. [ Blood Moon: Photos of 2010 Total Lunar Eclipse ]

Skywatchers in Central Siberia, eastern Mongolia, northeast China, and most of Japan, Korea, New Guinea, eastern Australia and New Zealand will see the moon entering the darker shadow, called the umbra. But only as it's going down in the west-southwest at the end of the night does the moon becomes totally eclipsed (at 1922 UT).

.On the other side of the globe, a slice of eastern South America, Western Europe and the west coast of Africa will see the moon emerge from above their east-southeast horizon on the evening of Wednesday (June 15), already in total eclipse.

As the moon climbs higher in the sky, skywatchers may be able to watch it slowly emerge from the Earth's shadow beginning at 2102 GMT.

You may recall that in early January, European cities such as Oslo, London, Paris and Madrid were all treated to a solar eclipse at sunrise. Now, just over half a year later they'll all see a lunar eclipse at moonrise.

What to look for

In the sky, the moon will crossing through the non-zodiacal constellation of Ophiuchus and will be positioned roughly halfway between the bright red star Antares in Scorpius and Nunki, the brightest star in the handle of the Teapot asterism of Sagittarius. The star clouds of the summer Milky Way in this particular region of the sky are bright and spectacular; sweeping with binoculars or a rich-field telescope reveals a mass of innumerable stars.

Of course, before the eclipse begins the moon will completely obscure these faint stars of the Milky Way, but as it gradually becomes more and more immersed in the Earth's shadow, the sky will correspondingly darken.

During totality, the moon will appear 10,000 to 100,000 times dimmer and will seem almost three-dimensional; like an eerily illuminated ball from a non-light polluted location, the beautiful summer Milky Way appears nearby as a striking backdrop.

And as a bonus, according to Phillip S. Harrington in his book "Eclipse!" (John Wiley & Sons Inc., 1997) during totality, the moon will occult the 9th magnitude globular cluster NGC 6401. Notes Harrington: "The best place to see the event will be in central Asia. There, as well as in eastern Europe and northeastern Africa, observers will see the moon occult the cluster in a comparatively dark sky."

A long lunar eclipse
At mid-eclipse (2013 GMT), the moon will be passing just to the north of the center of the Earth's shadow.

As such, the duration of totality is an unusually long 100 minutes, which is just seven minutes shy of the absolute maximum for a total lunar eclipse. In fact, over the last 100 years, only three other eclipses have rivaled the duration of totality of this eclipse : The total lunar eclipse of July 16, 1935, lasted 101 minutes; the eclipse of July 6, 1982, lasted 107 minutes; the eclipse of July 16, 2000, lasted 107 minutes.

The next total lunar eclipse of exceptional length will come on July 27, 2018, and will last 106 minutes.

On Dec. 10, 2011, another total lunar eclipse will be visible before the moon sets over the western United States and Canada. After that, the next total lunar eclipse that will be widely visible across all of North America will be on April 15, 2014.

If you plan to observe or photograph the total lunar eclipse of June 15 and would like to share your comments and images with SPACE.com for a possble story or image gallery, contact Managing Editor Tariq

NorthPoint Astrology Journal
Your Guide to Astrological Energies
June 13 to 19, 2011
Written by Pam Younghans

see astrology section below for entire post

OUR NEXT SCENE introduces the Lunar Eclipse, the main character in this week's drama -- although, truth be told, we've already been getting acquainted with some of the influences of this one, since eclipse energies can start to build about four weeks in advance of the exact occurrence.

This eclipse is a total eclipse and a very long one. According to Spaceweather.com, this will be the longest total eclipse in almost 11 years, with the Earth blocking the Sun's light from reaching the Moon (and reflecting back to us) for more than 100 minutes. All of us on Earth, even if we are not in a physical location for viewing the eclipse, as well as Gaia herself, will experience this extended period without the energetic imprinting we are used to receiving from the Moon -- energy that reaches us throughout the Moon's cycle, even when it is only a sliver in the sky.

With this energy source being interrupted, we become more aware than usual of what has been stored in our own unconscious minds. Memories, emotions and deeper motivations flood into consciousness, giving us the opportunity to do our own reflecting on what is really going on inside of us, what we really need and want, and what our intuition is trying to reveal to us regarding these matters.

AS WITH ALL THINGS astrological and otherwise, there are perceived positives and negatives to this event. The benefit comes from our being more in touch with our truth (Moon in Sagittarius), as well as gaining a stronger knowing of what we really believe in.

In the positive, Sagittarius is optimistic, adventurous and enthusiastic. In keeping with its symbol of the centaur's arrow, this sign is always aiming higher, seeking greater wisdom and a deeper understanding of truth. For Sagittarius, that path to wisdom involves explorations into new territory, keeping one's mind open to new ideas, and making oneself available to experiences that will expand one's view of reality.

On the less-than-positive side of the sign, the search for truth and wisdom can lose its joyful openmindedness and become limited dogma: "My truth is the only way" (subtext: and if you don't believe this way, you're in trouble). In the other extreme, the outgoingness of Sagittarius can become too scattered, never settling in on one idea long enough to reap its deeper meaning and gifts.

OUR RESPONSE to this eclipse, both individually and collectively, will depend not only on where we are in knowing ourselves and our truth, but also on how flexible we can be when considering that just because someone else believes differently, it doesn't mean that one of us is wrong. That's a tough one for most of our human minds to wrap around.

We may also be challenged to deal with some of those unconscious motivations and hidden beliefs that have been directing the course of our lives for many years-- perhaps since the last time there was an eclipse at the 25th degree of Sagittarius, on June 14, 1992.
