What's blue and white, squiggly and suddenly appears in the sky?
If you know the answer, pop it on a postcard and send it to the people of Norway, where this mysterious light display baffled residents yesterday.
Curiously, it appears to be unconnected with the aurora borealis, or northern lights, the natural magnetic phenomena that can often be viewed in that part of the world.

Actually whats quite funny in a Universe way is that I just asked a Norweigian guy on a message board a few days ago if he could take some pics of the aurora borealis and was also looking up a travel site dedicated to viewing the spectacle. :)

Not sure Mic but when I saw the spiral it reminded me of a Pic Zorgon has on his website.
I'm not buying the failed russian rocket story though!

I don't buy the missile out of control theory.
Is this a test for their project blue beam? Probably not.
Related to the Haldron Collider's successful test this week? Probably not.
Sorry I got nothng.

I've read all the guesses everywhere. I have no idea but it's interesting that there is a focal point behind that hill. I'm waiting for the jjury on this one.

well i haven't read any of the guesses... just looked at the first pic and to me it looks like a new bat signal (request for the superhero to jump in and help) and it looks like it is projected up not down..

Whats quite interesting in regards to the spiral is that there have been no sunspots for awhile
And I was just checking Spaceweather and if you read the whole article which is not much to read you can see a pathetic video they use to create a sort of Ho Hum explanation supporting the failed rocket Launch.
Wednesday morning, Dec. 9th, people in arctic Norway were stunned when a gigantic luminous spiral formed in the northern sky. "We are used to seeing lots of auroras here in Norway, but this was different," says Nick Banbury of Harstad who witnessed the phenomenon on his way to work "between 7:50 and 8:00 a.m. local time." Jan Petter Jorgensen took this photo: The first reaction of many readers when they see this picture is Photoshop! Surely this must be a fake. But no, many independent observers witnessed and phtotographed the apparition. It is real.
Banbury continues: "It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in color to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end. This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to Earth. According to press reports, this could be seen all over northern Norway and must therefore have been very high up in the atmosphere to be seen hundreds of km apart."
Further into the article you will find this Gem:
HYPOTHESIS: Evidence is mounting that the phenomenon was caused by a malfunctioning suborbital rocket, possibly a Bulava ICBM launched from a Russian submarine in the White Sea. A Navtex no-fly alert was issued for the White Sea on Dec. 9th, and photographers have recorded what appears to be the initial boost phase of a launch beneath the spiral (see inset). A rocket motor spinning out of control could indeed explain the spiral pattern, as shown in this video of a Trident II missile launched from a US submarine in 2007.
Heres the VIDEO of Trident II Missile Launched from a US NAVY Submarine in 2007
Now they Look really Similar

Mic I was busy getting that post ready and missed your Spiral post but yep that crossed my mind aswell as Linda had some good spiral stuff going on along with a thread on ATS I was involved in awhile back regarding some spirals in Alice Springs. Although I found those spirals in Alice to be Human Made something like this sparks my interest up and reminds me I still need to follow up on that as I still think there could be something Esoteric Behind them.
Good thinking there mate

Well this is a bit off topic but heck its not that weird and at the same time one of those moments where you sit back and say "Yeah right on Universe"
Here's a screen grab from a private forum I'm a member of which is *totally unrelated* to what is discussed here on this forum but Very relevant to this this thread.
The LINK in the screengrab posted below was from Dec 8th and can be viewed here:
I had to take out some info like user name and my signiture in the pic but otherwise its all as it stood, we were discussing soundcloud for music hosting ;)

And one more point of interest regarding the MIND NUMBING scenarios posed by the News Channels...Is that when the Millitary make something public they always make sure they got their bases covered, in this case its fumbling at best
"How do we explain this away"

Age you say? I don't know about that but I do work for the Millitary from time to time and I can see that they have no idea how to mitigate this little cock up which they have no control over..what a pisser
