sunny

this is the part that concerns me..can you feel the pressure?

The CME is not heading our way. Future CMEs could have greater effect as AR1339 turns toward Earth in the days ahead.

MAGNIFICENT SUNSPOT: One of the largest sunspots in years is rotating over the sun's northeastern limb. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of AR1339 during the early hours of Nov. 3rd:
 CMEs..now and coming soon Ar133910

Measuring some 40,000 km wide and at least twice that in length, the sprawling sunspot group is an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. Two or three of the sunspot's dark cores are wider than Earth itself.

Naturally, such a large sunspot has potential for strong flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of M-class solar flares during the next 24 hours. One such eruption has already occured: An M4-flare at 2200 UT on Nov. 2nd produced a bright flash of extreme UV radiation (SDO movie) and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. The CME is not heading our way. Future CMEs could have greater effect as AR1339 turns toward Earth in the days ahead. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

Rare near-Earth asteroid fly-by set for Tuesday
(AFP) – 13 hours ago
WASHINGTON — A massive asteroid will make a rare fly-by Tuesday, and although it poses no danger of crashing to Earth, US scientists said this week they are eager for a closer look.

"This is not a potentially hazardous asteroid, just a good opportunity to study one," said National Science Foundation astronomer Thomas Statler.

The circular asteroid, named 2005 YU55, is about 1,300 feet (400 meters) wide and will come closer than the Moon, zipping by at a distance of 202,000 miles (325,000 kilometers), the US space agency said.

The time of the nearest flyby is expected to be at 2328 GMT (6:28 Eastern time in the US).

The encounter will be the closest by an asteroid of that size in more than 30 years, and a similar event will not happen again until 2028.

However, those who want to see will need a telescope.

The asteroid is "going to be pretty faint when it flies by," said Scott Fisher, program director of the National Science Foundation's Division of Astronomical Sciences.

"It will not be visible to the naked eye. You will need a telescope that has a mirror at least six inches in size to see it. To make it even more difficult to observe, it will be moving very quickly across the sky as it passes."

Several radar telescopes are set up in North America to catch glimpses of the space rock, Fisher added.

"The best time (and place) to observe it would be in the early evening on November 8th from the east coast of the US."

Astronomers who have studied the object, part of the C-class of asteroids, say it is very dark, like the color of charcoal, and quite porous.

It was first discovered in 2005 by Robert McMillan of the Spacewatch Project, a solar-system-scanning group of scientists near Tucson, Arizona.

While 2005 YU55 will stay a safe distance away, it is part of a crew of 1,262 big asteroids circling the Sun and measuring more than 500 feet (150 meters) across that NASA classifies as "potentially hazardous."

"We want to study these asteroids so if one does look like it may hit us someday, we'll know what to do about it," Statler said.

The asteroid's closest pass is set to take place in 2094, at a distance of 167,000 miles (269,000 kilometers), according to forecasts.

"The observations will give us a piece of the puzzle, one we don't get many chances to see," said Don Yeomans of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

"At one time, we thought these were the asteroids that delivered carbon and other elements to the early Earth, so they are pretty important."

NASA said the last time a space rock this big approached Earth was in 1976, "although astronomers did not know about the fly-by at the time."

affraid

found the blurb on the test thing

FIRST NATIONWIDE TEST OF THE EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM

Test to Take Place November 9, 2011 at 2 p.m. ET

As part of their ongoing efforts to keep our country and communities safe during emergencies, the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Emergency Management Agency will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The EAS test plays a key role in ensuring the nation is prepared for all hazards, and that the U.S. public can receive critical and vital information, should it ever be needed. The first nationwide test will be conducted Wednesday, November 9 at 2 p.m. ET. This test may last up to three and a half minutes, and will be transmitted via television and radio stations within the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Similar to local emergency alert system tests, an audio message will interrupt television and radio programming indicating: “This is a test.” When the test is over, regular programming will resume. For more information about the nationwide Emergency Alert System test, please visit http://www.fema.gov/medialibrary/media_records/6407 and www.FCC.gov. On November 9 at 2 p.m. EDT, please remember: Don’t stress; it’s only a test.

Its been in the press here that tptw are to turn off all TV, internet and phones similtaniously on 9th November. Note that 9/11 theme again!!

I'd have thought it would be more prudent to keep all contact open in a real emergency, not to close it all down. Must be me. I dunno

this is what i know thru personal experience:
was working in restaurant when california EQ hit, the
one during the world series, i forget what year...
the t.v. sets were on for the game ... all of a sudden,
the screens went fuzzy
***
catastrophe hits, weatherwise, and cell phones go out or
get overloaded as in "your call cannot be completed ....."
***
i do not know who they are trying to fool, but i would like
to see just one instance where the "EBS" actually did any
good as far as advice to people or help in any way ...
does anyone have a real example?

I just watched this link.... In English http://www.fema.gov/medialibrary/media_records/6407 ... and all it said was they're going to test the sytem to see if it works. It took two men several minutes to get this far.

HELLO, they system is already working, everyone has a TV connection (those of us who choose to have a TV that is...lol) we all have phones that work, we all have an internet connection. What exactly are they testing for?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
