since i am here, decided to look up some
old friends ... did a quick search for
stephanie who was the woman who reminded
us all of grace slick (jefferson airplane) and
lived a hippie dream life ... she, an artist
working freelance for hallmark cards married to
him (john) a salesman for warner brother records
and they living in an "upscale" haight-ashbury
victorian with lots of persian rugs, plants, gold
records on the wall, artwork everywhere, the best
smoke in town ... they were the golden couple
of those years, taught me how to take lsd and had
tickets to every major rock'n'roll show around, most
often with backstage passes - they knew all the
best places to eat out (price+quality) and bought
their bmw with cash while most of us were still
hitchhiking .... i would ask my mom for the car
to go to the library to do homework (i was still
a senior in high school) but instead would go
across the golden gate bridge to john & stephanie's ...
they had a cat named gus furrpaws that weighed in
at 20 lbs ... she even had little framed pieces
of art hung around catbox level for gus, all feline-themed
of course .... i had searched the internet years ago
and found nothing, but today i found her ....

- SAN FRANCISCO / Artist dies in fire at Bernal Heights home
February 07, 2007|By Jaxon Van Derbeken
A 60-year-old graphic designer and artist died in an apparent accidental fire in a home she rented on Cortland Avenue in Bernal Heights, San Francisco authorities said.
Stephanie Montgomery was found dead Monday soon after firefighters put out the 5:46 p.m blaze. Her longtime friend Judy Rix said Tuesday that Montgomery had recently suffered a stroke and had a degenerative bone disease that made walking difficult.
"She was confined to one room," she said.
Montgomery came to San Francisco after working as a graphic artist for Hallmark, the greeting card company, and became immersed in the local rock music world. "Anything that was rock 'n' roll-related, she was there," Rix said.
She designed posters, T-shirts and other material for various groups in the 1970s, Rix said, and had amassed a collection of rare 45 records, many of which were destroyed in the fire.
