- Tibetans in exile begin voting for new political leader as Dalai Lama retires
Tibetans living in exile across the world have begun voting for a new political leader, as the Dalai Lama has decided to retire from his position as head of the Tibetan government-in-exile and go on solely as a spiritual leader. The Tibetan parliament-in-exile is discussing constitutional changes to meet the Dalai Lama’s request that the prime minister becomes head of government. The 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso has been leading the government-in-exile and the resistance movement against Chinese rule since he fled to India following the 1959 Tibetan Rebellion. The 76-year-old Nobel Peace laureate said he will continue his role as Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader. He had earlier said: “My desire to devolve authority has nothing to do with a wish to shirk responsibility. It is to benefit Tibetans in the long run.” http://rt.com/news/line/2011-03-20/#id5863 | |
