PostSubject: Warning - Pet Owners   Warning - Pet Owners Icon_minitimeWed Jun 16, 2010 6:06 pm

I just received this email so spreading the word.

Warning - Pet Owners

Please share this with all the pet owners you know and ask them to do the same.

This information will only take a few minutes to share might prevent the senseless death of other pets.

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do. Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Target, Foreman's Garden Supply and other garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'.

It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Although the mulch has NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobromine_poisoning

"A typical 20 kg (44 lb) dog will normally experience intestinal distress after eating less than 240 g (8.5 oz) of dark chocolate, but won't necessarily experience bradycardia or tachyarrhythmia unless it eats at least a half a kilogram (1.1 lb) of milk chocolate. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, approximately 1.3 g of baker's chocolate per kilogram of a dog's body weight (0.02 oz/lb) is sufficient to cause symptoms of toxicity.[citation needed] For example, a typical 25 gram (1 oz) baker's chocolate bar would be enough to bring out symptoms in a 20 kg (44 lb) dog.

Chemists with the USDA are investigating the use of theobromine as a toxicant to control coyotes that prey on livestock."

Good grief and there is no warning on the bag, that's absolutely disgusting.
