thanks, zuni... i just came across an article on how to harvest and prepare cactus, which seems to be the only edible thing around me at the moment (they are called prickly pear) the article was in a paper, if anyone is interested, i will type it in

winehippie, i believe you can obtain fresh water from a barrel cactus. if youre in an area where you can find prickly pears, you can probably find barrel cacti. scorpions are edible, too, sans the tail.

supposedly, one would take a machete and chop off the top. the pulp is mashed and the water squeezed from it.
one might also find strawberry cacti out in the deserts of california or northern mexico. the fruits are apparently very tasty, albeit small. les shroud seemed to like em, at least. : )
another option would be to take any old cactus and smash it up. a hole would be dug where youd stick a bucket in it and surround the bucket with the cactus mash. using a piece of plastic, simply cover the hole, securing the ends of the plastic and put a rock in the middle so that the condensation simply drips into the bucket.
small, shaded crevices in desert rock formations sometimes hold water. anywhere there is green plant life is a good place to dig for water, especially at the base of a rock formation as any rainwater would collect at the bottom. dried up streambeds almost always have water just below the surface.
