Who Owns the Sun? Spanish Woman Lays Claim

In Bizarre News Sun_ha10

If you're in your car late at night, you may happen upon a radio commercial for the "International Star Registry," an Illinois operation that allows you to "name a star" in the sky for a loved one's birthday, Valentine's Day, etc. They'll be glad to sell you a certificate or a piece of jewelry to prove it, though if you go over the fine print you'll find you really haven't done anything official for your $54 (or more).

Now, Angeles Duran, a 49-year-old woman from Salvaterra do Mino, Spain, has gone one step further: She's gone to her local notary public and claimed ownership of the Sun.

"There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law," she told the Spanish daily El Mundo, according to AFP. "I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first."

Over at Discovery News, Ray Villard, a veteran science writer I've known for some years, has had a bit of fun with this:

"Well, why not own the sun?" he writes. "It's low maintenance, it has sustained nuclear fusion reactions for the last 4.6 billion years without repairs and it comes with a 10 billion-year warranty backed by the laws of gravity, hydrodynamics, and particle physics." Click HERE for Villard's piece.

Ms. Duran told El Mundo she plans to charge all users (that would be us) a fee. She'd give half the proceeds to the Spanish government, 20 percent to Spain's pension fund, 10 percent to research, 10 percent to ending world hunger. She would keep the remaining 10 percent for herself.

What will she do if you don't pay? Turn it off?

Villard retorts: "I'd advise Duran against renaming the sun because it already has good branding and market share. But she needs to trademark the word 'sun.' She could also assert copyright over sunset, sunrise, and solar eclipse photos. She could insist that the credit line read: 'Sun, courtesy of A. Duran.'"

"The downside is that Duran is now also now responsible for all damages caused by the sun," he writes. "If someone can sue McDonalds for spilling hot coffee in his or her lap, than anyone can sue Duran for sunburn...."

Ray's piece has provoked some fittingly tongue-in-cheek comments, including this one: "I hereby claim all the space between the sun and earth! I will be charging her sun rays a toll for crossing my space!"

Well, as far as I know she didn't make the sun, it was there before she was born and will be there after she's gone, not payin.

Ewe have got to be kidding! The 'puppy' born to a SHEEP

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 7:29 PM on 25th March 2011

Vets say it’s impossible - but to Chinese farmer Liu Naiying his birth is a miracle.
For Mr Liu insists one of his sheep has given birth to a dog
The 'puppy' has wool like a lamb but its mouth, nose, eyes, paws and tail look more like a dog's.

In Bizarre News Articl12

His 'sheep dog' even plays like a hound.
The birth has prompted thousands to flock to his farm in Shaanxi Province to see for themselves.
Mr Liu told how he found the unusual baby animal shortly after it was born in one of his fields.
‘I was herding the sheep, and saw a sheep licking her newborn lamb on the grassland. The lamb was still wet,’ he said.
‘When I went up close to check on the lamb I was shocked because it looked so weird, like a cross between a sheep and a dog.

In Bizarre News Articl13

‘I was a bit frightened, as I've been raising sheep for 20 years and had never seen such a creature.’
Yue Guozhang, a researcher at Xi'an City Animal Husbandry Technology Centre, said sheep and dogs were different species.
‘It's not possible that a sheep could become pregnant with a puppy,’ he said. ‘It's likely that this is just an abnormal lamb.’

Sheep pigs pull wool over our eyes
AT first glance, with its woolly coat, onlookers would be forgiven for mistaking this creature for a sheep.
However, a closer look at this rare breed reveals a snout and trotters usually found on pigs.

It’s a confusing sight, but this is one of three curly coated Mangalitza ‘sheep-pigs’ which have been delivered to a UK zoo.

As part of a programme to help save the animals from extinction, staff at Tropical Wings in Essex are hoping they can help the breed survive.

Originating from Austria and Hungary, the Mangalitza is similar to the native Lincolnshire curly coat breed which died out in Britain 40 years ago.

‘At first sight, people think they are sheep,’ Denise Cox, education co-ordinator, at Tropical Wings, said.

‘It is not until they turn around and you see their faces and snouts you realise they are in fact pigs.

‘The woolly coat makes them very hardy and helps them to survive in the harsh winters in their native Austria and Hungary.

‘In the summer it helps protect them from sunburn.’

The sheep-pig used to be a common sight in Lincolnshire and was shorn once a year to make sweaters, but it became extinct in Britain in 1972.

In the early 1900s, many Lincolnshire curly coats were sold to Austria and Hungary where they were crossed with the Mangalitza, creating the Lincolista.

Three years ago this cross-breed were found thriving in Austria and a small number were brought back to create a herd in Britain.

Now offspring from this herd have gone to Essex to form part of a programme to prevent the breed from disappearing.

They are worth around £1,000, five times the value of an ordinary pig and are fond of fruit and the odd tipple.

Blond-haired male, Buddy, black-coated female, Porsche, and ginger Margot have already attracted lots of interest from visitors.

‘Although there is a small amount of genetic DNA in there, they are in a small way linked to Lincolnshire curly coat,’ Ms Cox added.

‘It’s extremely rare, particularly in its native Hungary and Austria.

‘We want to show people what these native woolly pigs used to look like and ensure the breed remains in this country and survives.

‘They have already become a real talking point at the zoo and everyone loves them.’

Ms Cox said there was a possibility Porsche could already be pregnant.

‘Her tummy looks much rounder than the other female, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed,’ she said.

Cow manure fetish man jailed for two years in UK

A BRITISH man with a fetish for cow manure was beginning a two-year jail sentence today after he was caught sexually pleasuring himself while covered in dung on a farm in southwestern England.
David Truscott, 41, was found naked apart from a single sock by farmer Clive Roth's 16-year-old son last month, on Woodbury House Farm in Penzance, local newspaper The Falmouth Packet reported.
When officers arrived, he was covered in a large amount of slurry and mud and was surrounded by tissues.
It was the third time he was caught in similar circumstances at the same farm. He was previously jailed for offenses linked to his fetish.
Judge Christopher Elwen, presiding at Truro Crown Court, turned down defense calls for a suspended sentence, saying that Truscott had to be jailed for his "bizarre and perverted activities."
Truscott pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to breaching a restraining order and causing harassment.

Cow Caper Nets 26 Gallons of Milk

North Stafford, Va. –– Perhaps he was thirsty, or it was because he never got enough calcium as a child, or maybe he had a thing for dressing like a farm animal.

Whatever the reason Stafford sheriff’s authorities say a man donned a cow costume and not walked, but crawled into a Walmart store on Garrisonville Road (Va. 610) in North Stafford at 10:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say he found a shopping cart and then pushed it to the milk isle.

Now on two feet, security guards inside the store say the upright cow was caught on video tape placing 26 gallons of milk –– about $92 worth of the moo-cow juice –– into a the shopping cart, and then rolled it out of the store.

A manager called 911 to report the larceny that was caught on video tape.

At one point someone reported a man in a cow suit was trying to give away the milk to customers, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.

A sheriff’s deputy took a police report, and shortly thereafter was then called to a disturbance at a McDonald’s restaurant across the street.

Three cars awaited the deputy in the parking lot of the fast food joint, and when he began asking questions he noticed one man looked similar to a person he had just saw on video wearing a cow costume, liberating the milk, said Kennedy.

The deputy brought the man back to the Walmart store where he was identified as the cow culprit, said Kennedy.

Jonathan Payton, 18, of North Stafford was issued a summons for shoplifting, and was released on his own recognizance.

As for the milk: a store manager found it sitting in a shopping cart outside the store. The cow costume was also recovered.

Woman 'tried to sneak inmate out of prison in suitcase'

A woman was caught trying to sneak her common-law-husband out of a Mexican prison in a suitcase following a conjugal visit, according to police.

In Bizarre News Suitca10

Staff at the prison in Chetumal in the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo noticed that the woman seemed nervous and was pulling a black, wheeled suitcase that looked bulky, said a police spokesman.
Prison guards checked the bag of 19-year-old Maria del Mar Arjona and found inmate Juan Ramirez Tijerina curled up inside in the fetal position, he added.
The prisoner is serving a 20-year sentence for a 2007 conviction for illegal weapons possession.
Arjona was arrested and charges are pending.
The attempted escape comes months after police discovered a bar at prison in northern Mexico that served beer, tequila and vodka to inmates.

Aussie couple infected with toothed worms
Published: July 7, 2011 at 4:30 AM

In Bizarre News Aussie10

PRAHRAN, Australia, July 7 (UPI) -- An Australian doctor said a couple in Victoria are believed to be the first in the country to become infected with a species of parasitic worms with teeth.

Dr. Andrew Fuller of the Alfred hospital in Prahran said the couple are believed to have ingested the gnathostomiasis larvae when they caught and ate a fish, likely a black bream, during a Western Australia camping trip, The (Melbourne) Herald Sun reported Wednesday.

Fuller said the tiny worms have teeth allowing them to "go anywhere they like in the body."

"They move under the skin and cause itchy lumps that can make you feel sick -- and it can be very hard to diagnose," the doctor said.

He said symptoms of infection include fever, muscle pain, vomiting and skin irritations resembling an orange peel.

Fuller said the couple recovered after receiving a course of antibiotics. He said he has treated the condition before, but the couple are believed to have been the first to contract the worms in Australia.

Genetic testing finds new mini frog

Quote :
Researchers have discovered a new miniature frog species in Western Australia's remote Pilbara region.

The Pilbara toadlet is thought to have gone unnoticed for a million years and has adapted to the harsh desert conditions.

The finding was made by researchers from the University of Western Australia, the West Australian Museum and the Australian National University.

ANU PhD student Renee Catullo says the two centimetre toadlet is unique.

"It has big glands and it has brown spots all over it, it also has a different call from all the other species," she said.

S.African 'corpse' wakes up, scares off morgue staff
AFP – Sun, Jul 24, 2011

A 50-year-old South African man thought to be dead woke up in a chilly morgue on Sunday and shouted to be let out, scaring off two attendants who thought he was a ghost, local media reported.
"His family thought he had died," health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo told the Sapa news agency.
"The family called a private undertaker who took what they thought was a dead body to the morgue, but the man woke up inside the morgue on Sunday at 5:00 pm and screamed, demanding to be taken out of the cold place."
This caused two mortuary attendants on duty to flee the building in the small town of Libode in the rural Eastern Cape as they thought it was a ghost.
After calling for help and returning to find the man alive, an ambulance was sent to fetch the man who had "been exposed to extreme cold for nearly 24 hours" said Kupelo.
He said the public should not assume that a sick person had died and contact a mortuary, the report said.
"Doctors, emergency workers and the police are the only people who have a right to examine the patients and determine if they are dead or not."

Kooralbyn family says they are prisoners in their own home because of aggressive wallaby they have named Wacker

By Brooke Baskin
From: The Courier-Mail
July 28, 2011

In Bizarre News 00031710

A KOORALBYN family say they are prisoners in their own home ever since a rampaging wallaby moved into the neighbourhood.
Julie Bambrick said an unusually aggressive pretty-faced wallaby - dubbed Wacker by the family - had terrorised her 11-year-old grandson Reece, bowled over her husband Virgil and bit him on the face, and hissed, snarled and scratched at her whenever she ventured into her garden.
She said the family had been attacked while putting the rubbish out, going to the car and even just stepping out the front door.
"I'm scared to go outside,'' Ms Bambrick said. "I won't go out into the garden because I'm terrified this crazy wallaby is going to come and have another go. The kids won't go out and play because they're too frightened.''
Wacker's rampage follows the weekend attack on 94-year-old Charleville pensioner Phyllis Johnson by Eddie the red kangaroo.
Ms Bambrick, who has lived in the area for nine years, said Wacker first attacked Reece in March and now seemed to keep a constant watch on her Edward Place home.
"It just sits outside the house and eye-balls us,'' she said. "It's a big one up to my chest in height and we're all terrified of it. My biggest fear is it could really hurt a child and there are plenty of children along this street.''
Ms Bambrick said she kept a star-picket, a pitchfork and a crowbar at the front and back doors in case the wallaby attacked.
She even contacted the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, which told her to fill a watergun with dye to try to mark the problem animal but even that had proven challenging.
"It didn't work. It started attacking me and I had to try and defend myself by beating it away with the watergun.''
Ms Bambrick said Reece had been bailed up more than once in the backyard.
"It's just awful,'' she said. We're prisoners in our own home.''
A Department of Environment and Resource Management spokesman said it was aware of the attacks by the wallaby.
"Kangaroos and wallabies that are used to being fed can approach people expecting food,'' he said. "When there is no food, they may become aggressive.
"For kangaroos and wallabies living on the bushland fringe of a suburban area, a human may be seen as little more than a large animal living in its habitat and one that they may need to defend against.''
