good morning, everyone.....
****
as i have stated previously, "things" are happening so quickly,
it is difficult to keep up with it all - here is one little story
unfolding as i write:
****
in april of this year, a member of the American Legion
Auxilliary realized her dream of starting a chapter of
the Riders for our Post 57
****
i was volunteer bartender on duty when the first gathering took
place and was allowed to eavesdrop as i served drinks
and appetizers - there was intense emotion around the possibilities
of riding as a group as well as doing service for others
****
as soon as i thought to myself that i would give anything to be
part of a group like that, i heard the definitions of "member"
and "associate member" and "charter member"
****
it was then that i realized that i could be an associate charter member -
a member of the post family, willing to be a support vehicle for the
riders, with no motorcycle of my own ----> i immediately
signed up and that evening collected enough gratuity money to
pay my dues
****
next came the issues of patches - the logo patched onto the
back of leather or denim jacket or vest - design and placement
were decided upon, and it was determined that we would use
our local people to do the job - their best price to us was $60
apiece
****
i searched for a denim jacket or vest at the local thrift store to no
avail, but when i mentioned to sis what i was looking for and why,
she walked back to her room and returned with a denim jacket she
says she has never worn and that she thinks i gave it to her a long
time ago, and that she was giving back to me - it fits like a glove
but i do not remember ever owning it, perhaps she is correct, i do not know
****
and because i had done some web work for the
embroiderers as a favor, i got the design embroidered onto the
jacket as a gift from them to me - it is stunning
****
the organization was officially born at the end of april - then we
heard about the Riders For The Wall and their roadtrip from
california to arlington, va - their motto is "we ride because they can't"
referring to the wounded and MIA and POW's
****
from california they split off into two routes, highway 40 and highway 10
and our newly formed group contacted a neighboring well-established group
and together we gathered on an overpass just outside of town and waited with
flags flying to greet them and wave them through - every big rig that passed
under us waved and honked, many of the passenger cars did, too
****
i turned to a friend and said that it was amazing to be part of a group like this
and NOT be protesting anything - the energy was extremely high
and positive and joyful - everyone had goosebumps as the riders
approached - the riders added to the vibrations as they were only 15 miles
from their first scheduled stop in williams, just east of us
****
a rider from the traveling group pulled off and joined us on the overpass
to let us know how much it meant to the riders to come across the desert
where they hadn't seen anyone for miles and miles and then to catch
a glimpse of supporters on that overpass up ahead - he said that first
leg of the trip is fairly desolate and that we definitely elevated spirits -
they were surprised and grateful to see so many out of nowhere, unexpectedly
****
saturday, we took part in the founders' day parade - remember that i carried
the az state flag in last year's parade? this year, i drove my little red
convertible and another woman held our Riders flag as we followed the fire
engines with our riders behind us - it was awesome
****
today, we are taking our first ride to grand canyon caverns - i will have
the cooler icing down bottles of water and i will carry my riders' extra
gear and anything else they may need - i need to be gassed up and ready to
roll by 10am, so i gotta run, but just had to share this with you first
****
i created a blog, which i will be working on, but the beginning is here
if you would like to look - there are some photos of the overpass experience:
