ahhhhhhhhhhhh today it is onions...i don't eat them myself, but i do cook with them and i luv to grow em
i will include the place where i get them at the bottom of this entry and you can check them out..
they are really nice folks and have tons of info on line on how to
i have gotten to the point where i grow two types.. both long day onions..a sweet eating onion called
walla-walla and a keeping onion,
coprahere's a pic of some of the copra that i still have from last years crop..yep they will keep for a year..
these are about 4 or 5 inches..where the wallas-wallas can be up to 8 inches
this year the local feed store said they would have the plants i wanted...they lied..sigh
they only had the walla-wallas..so i shared some of those with a friend cause i am trying to down size
and when they didn't have the keepers i got on line and of course, i ordered more stuff than i needed
downsize...
got some fancy ones called red marble cippolini and some lancelot leeks..i have always wanted to try those
especially to make leek and potato soup ..yum
soo so much for downsizing..sigh
here is what the ones i bought at the feed store look like...basically the same as when they come in the mail
they are live plants
and they are all sizes..the size you plant really doesn't matter ..give the tiny ones as much space as the bigger ones
well my little growing box just isn't going to be big enough..that's for sure
i went with 8 inch rows and about 6/7 inches between plants
which is squeezing them a bit
but i also have the big plot in the garden where they will get more roomso we will see if the box let's them grow as big
i only have room for 4 more rows and i want to plant the keepers in here also soooooooooo
only two rows of walls wallas..20 total
one knuckle deep in soft soil..make sure they stand up straight
and water in
onions don't like to be buried deep and will grow with their shoulder out of the soil..so don't panic
they also like it hot and not real rainy
so the remaining 52 went out into two rows in the big plot
which now has two rows each of yukon gold and red pontiac potatoes
and a row of 50 some garlic
and now two rows of walla wallas
and it will also get some copras
oh yeah i can hear you..
what in the world do i do with all those onions
in a word
SHARE here's one place to check them out......i don't know about oz..sorry
