Mid-Leo Lughnasa 'The Power Gate of
Fire'
Lammas is the season, so the wise folk say,
When love can grow as much by night
As love can grow by day. ~ ancient anonymous
The Sun is at mid-Leo on August 7th, one of the four cross-quarter
days of the year. Each cross-quarter is the midpoint of one of the
fixed signs of the zodiac. These signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and
Aquarius 'fix' the power of the elements especially at their
midpoints, the four elemental 'power gates'. Mid-Leo is the Power Gate
of Fire or Will. As Leo rules the heart, this is also a Power Gate=2 0of
Love.
Old world druids and nature magicians celebrated these 8 times of the
year when fire magic is most powerful. These 8 ‘solar power gates’ are
the Solstices, the Equinoxes and the 4 'Cross-Quarter Days' including
the Lammas seasonal midpoint on August 6-8. Ritual fires at this time
bring good luck for the following season. When we don't do fires,
Mother Nature creates her own. Lightning strikes cause fires
especially at these times. Small ritual fires at places of natural
power can offset Nature's need for larger fires. Lammas, the cross-
quarter day of the summer season, is a time most favored for mountain
top fires and picnics.
At this time followers of the old faith would go to sacred places on
mountains and hills to share a feast that included bread of the first
harvest, hence the name Lammas or 'loaf mass'. Bread made or brought
to the mountain is believed to be imbued with transcendent spirit like
the Hobbits Lammas bread in Lord of the Rings. This ceremony may also
be done at any time during the August 7-22 Hora.
Note: One of the best places I've found for outdoor fire is near the
old Cloudland Hotel site at the top of Roan Mt on the Tennessee /
North Carolina border. A group of us from Charlotte will be having a
'fire drum' and picnic there on August 7th. The fire will be lit at
1:34 pm, true noon here this time of year. All who live nearby are
welcome to join us -

The mid-Leo power gate is a time for transforming, re-imaging,
realizing personal dreams, actualizing ambitions, renewing cultural
ideals, uniting the worlds. Mid-Leo August 6-8 is a special time for
illuminated vision. Dreams and portents presage what's to come in the
Autumn season. Take note!
The Catholic Feast of Transfiguration on August 6th celebrates the
time when Jesus went up on the mountain and was illuminated.
"Then Jesus went forth unto a mountaintop to pray. And as he prayed a
brilliant light appeared; his form became as radiant as precious
stone; his face shown like the Sun; his garments seemed as white as
snow; the son of humanity became the son of God. He was transformed
that the people of the Earth might see the possibilities of
humanity." ~ The Aquarian Gospel, Levi
August 6-8 is one of the four fixed sign 'cross quarter day' power
gates and one of the 8 fire festivals or solar power gates in the
annual cycle of celebration. The Druids revered the Sun as the most
powerful manifestation of universal spirit and believed this spiritual
power most present at the 8 seasonal turning points. The central way
of connecting with spirit at these times was simply circling fire
'Sunwise' or clockwise in celeb ration. Every circle becomes an eight-
spoked wheel like the Wheel of Fortune of Tarot. This is more
especially so when we dance the circle on one of the eight spokes of
the year.
A reason for going to that solar prana is more present at higher
elevations where magnetic inversions occur and pranic energy or plasma
from the Sun flows down their lines of force. Jesus often went to the
mountain to pray because there he could better be heard by 'the father
who art in heaven.'
This year the Sun is exactly 15 degrees of Leo at 5:15 am edt (9:15 am
gmt) on August 7th. The midpoint of Leo is when the power of the Sun
god Lugh is felt most strongly. This is a time of death, rebirth and
healing of the king and the death/rebirth of the order of things in
the world as a whole. What is seeded now unfolds its influence through
the August 7-22 hora, what is unfolded shapes the harvest.
The Druids built fires and beat drums following a solar eclipse, not
'to bring back the Sun' as many believe, but to tune into and power on
a new rhythm for a new creation. Understanding eclipses was key to
Druid religious science, Stonehenge was built to predict eclipses.
Following a total solar eclipse the next solar power gate is important
for celebration. Lammas / Lughnasa marks the cross-quarter of Summer,
the mid-Leo ‘power gate of fire’ when the Sun is exactly halfway
between Summ er Solstice and Equinox. Now the Druids would stoke up
their fires and beat drums to power on a new cosmic creation.
"Lugh, the 'Shining One," was an ancient Irish hero and Sun god. Known
also as the 'Wonderworker,' he was a magician, poet, warrior,
storyteller, craftsman and ruler... Lugh was credited with the
invention of horsemanship and horse races were featured in his
festival. On this day too, horses and cattle were ridden through
rivers because the Tiatha de Danaan believed strongly in the health-
giving and purifying powers of water. Offerings of wildflowers and
grain were made to ensure a good harvest and were placed on hilltops,
at sacred wells and at standing stones... Lammas is the time for
wishes; wishing the crops to thrive and the harvest to be bountiful.
It is also the time to harvest our own wishes and dreams. Lugh, the
Wonderworker, is a reminder that anything is possible and the
possibilities are unlimited. In the spirit of the Tiatha de Danaan, an
ancient tradition of this time is to wade into the nearest body of
water, to be cleansed and healed. In the spirit of the harvest
festival, we may now reap the benefits of all that we have sown."

will need to be refigured about once a week.
Figuring the Hours - Sunrise and Sunset are found in the newspaper
weather section or online. True Noon (when the Sun is most directly
overhead) is halfway between Sunrise and Sunset. The beginning times
for the other four magic hours are found by dividing the quarters of
the day: Midmorning is halfway between Sunrise and True Noon, etc.
The canonical hours are given Latin names of the planetary hours
beginning with Sunrise: prime is 1st hour, tierce is the 3rd, sext is
6th, etc. Matins is from Matuta, the Roman goddess of Dawn. Planetary
hours vary in length through the year with night hours longer and day
hours becoming shorter after Summer Solstice.
"A Year is as a Day": The canonical hours in the day correspond to the
equinoxes, solstices and cross-quarter days in the year . Day and year
follow the same 8 phase octave beat. True Noon corresponds to Summer
Solstice and the August 6/7 cross-quarter corresponds to Midafternoon
or Nones.
0AThe 8 canonical hours are ideal for prayer, meditation, or for
beginning any new activity. These times are best for making important
calls, beginning meetings, doing a ceremony, beginning or attending a
social gathering, starting a new work project, signing contracts, etc.
More magical synchronicities occur in these hours and whatever is
initiated will flow more easily and be more successful.
Being key to illumination and transformation, canonical hours are
called 'magic hours', 'prayer hours' and 'power hours'.
"All power is of one kind, a sharing of the nature of the world. The
mind that is parallel with the laws of Nature will be in the current
of events, and strong with their strength." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson,

The Chiron Decan of Leo - A great ritual transformation occurs each
year as the Sun transits the Centaurus / Chiron decan of Leo from
August 2nd to 12th. According to Greek myth, the wise centaur Chiron
gathers all the gods and goddesses around a fiery altar on a mountain
top to unite them in overcoming the evil Titans. The Sun transits the
midpoint of this Leo decan on August 6-8.
President Obama, born August 4th, is a good example of the Chiron
archetype. Intro:
